Milk & lactose concept diagram

The category is only the beginning

Isolate and concentrate identify different whey ingredient categories. They are not names for an entire finished recipe. A powder can contain one, a combination, or additional ingredients that matter to your comparison.

Milk protein remains the key allergy question

Do not treat whey isolate as milk-free. When milk protein is the restriction, the lactose discussion does not remove that issue. Read the allergen declaration and seek advice specific to your allergy.

Ask for product-specific lactose information

If lactose is your concern, look for a supported claim about the actual product. Do not assign an exact lactose number from the word isolate. Formula, serving and flavor information should be checked together.

Compare the finished drinks fairly

Use the same comparison basis: serving information, source, flavor, sweeteners and mixing liquid. A flavored concentrate shake and an unflavored isolate in water change several things at once. That may be a real purchasing choice, but it is not a controlled source comparison.

A relevant product assessment

Our Legion Whey+ page covers an isolate product family and explains why its flavor-specific information matters. It should be read with the lactose-free guide if your decision depends on a lactose claim.
